Fallen Angels-English 11-Third Block

We will begin reading the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers early next week. You will need to go to the library and check out your own copy of Fallen Angels before next Monday. You will need to do this on your own time. You will not be permitted to leave class to go and check your book out. You have the time before school, after school, and during your lunch to do this.

Look at the following questions and respond to them in the comment section. If you decide to post anonymously, without providing a user name, be sure to include your name in your post so that I may award you credit for completing the project. Some of the questions may require you to research other areas of the Internet. Perhaps, you might look up a summary of the novel to help you in making a decision. Please use your time wisely. You have only today in class to finish the assignment. I also encourage you to read what others are posting and feel free to respond and comment appropriately. All inappropriate comments will result in deduction of points for the project.

DO NOT COPY AND PASTE RESPONSES FROM OTHER SOURCES. I WILL BE DOING A CHECK. ANYONE CAUGHT DOING THIS WILL RECEIVE A 0/100 FOR THE PROJECT AND WILL BE WRITTEN UP FOR ACADEMIC DISHONESTY. You've been warned!

Fallen Angels

The following statements represent big ideas from the novel that can relate to many other war-related texts you might read. Simply write "agree" or "disagree" and more importantly, explain WHY.

1. Young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience.

2. War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong.

3. War brings out extremes of behavior--not only courage, loyalty, and sacrifice but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance.

4. War is chaotic. People often find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in combat.

Thought Provoking Questions. (Yes, you will need to answer these in depth which will require you to do some research online.)

1. What do you already know about The Vietnam War?
2. What do you want to know about The Vietnam War?
3. Why, in your opinion, was The Vietnam War so controversial?

1. I agree with this because you can go into war at the age of 18 and you are still maturing. At 18 you still are young and haven’t learned everything. You have to go from being child like to becoming a man and acting like one. War can be good and it can be bad. The good in war is to teach you respect and how to be a man. The bad is you can die in war. Even though you can die you can die supporting your country and to me that a really good way to die.

Agree and Disagree Questions: Fallen Angels
1. I agree with this question. Young soldiers have to grow up faster than what they need because they have to face life and death at a fast pace.
2. I agree with this statement because most people think they have it hard until they realize how hard people have it in different countries.
3. I agree with this statement also. People go to war it messes with their mind. After war they now have the ability to kill anyone they want.
4. I agree and disagree. The soldiers no why they are at war and they know the meaning of war. Most people know what’s going on but some chose to be ignorant about the situation

Depth Questions: Fallen Angels
1. The Vietnam War was between America and the Japanese. I know my grandfather fought in it. If you were drafted you had to go or get put in prison. Some people managed to leave the country but weren’t aloud back in the country.
2. I want to know what exactly started the war and why they drafted soldiers.
3. The Vietnam war was so controversial because there were many different countries and races in this war. Both young and old people fought. Many people still today don’t know exactly why The Vietnam War even happened.

Anonymous said...

1) Agree or Disagree
2) 1-I agree with the first one, because it’s true. Soldiers that go out into war, that haven’t been out yet, grow up. I think they don’t have any other choice. And if they don’t mature up, they wont make it.
3) 2-Some people wouldn’t kill for no reason before they had went to war, because you would never know who’s the enemy is. So everyone would be a victim!!
4) 3-It creates all of that because you are taught to kill certain people. And if you would ever see someone out on the streets that would look like one of them would, you wouldn’t like them. And then you would think one of them would probably blow something up.
5) 4-I disagree with that one. I think a lot of people know the meaning in war, and fighting. Because everything happens for a reason. I don’t think we would be fighting over in Iraq if they would not have done 9-11. So I disagree

Provoking Question
1-people went insane with that war. It was the most intense war we’ve had in history
2-why that war even stared
3-because of everything that happened, like with the torturing people, and all that other stuff.

1.We agree, the more the experience the more knowledge they have of whats going on.
2.We agree war makes people do things they wouldn’t normally do.
3.We disagree, some people are over there for their country, and they are fighting to help their country.
4.We agree, in combat people need to fight for their rights. In combat everything happens to fast its hard to tell what’s going on

1.Some of the people killed in Vietnam were under the age of 16.
2.Why its was started and how many casualties there were?
3.There was so many different cultures and people of different ages

Paige,
Do you believe that everyone realizes how hard people have it elsewhere? Why then does so much racism towards the Middle East exist today?
Secondly, double check your answer to the second number 1.

Thanks,
Chez

Chez said...

JOhnny and Colby,

In reference to your second response: How has this effected the rest of society? Are we doing enough for returning soliders? Does Veteran's Affairs prepare soldiers to enter the common day working world?

Tudor and John,
In response to your second statement: why is that? Also, how do differring ages and cultures effect the war and our society?

Thanks,
Chez

1. I agree with this text simply because going into the military is a very big thing in a persons life. If you were to ask veterans about their experience in the wars of the past they will tell you that it changed their lives completely. Some thought it was a simple thing, and then they come to find out that it changed them from a snobby child into an independent adult. . Even now they still see images from the war and re-live it at times. If you aren’t mature when you go into the military you sure will be when you come out. So yes I agree with this text completely.

2. I’m not quite sure how to respond just because I have never been to war or in the military, but if I were to choose I would probably agree. When you go to war you forget about everything, there is only a few things you are probably thinking about your family, you surviving, and lastly finishing the war. Really nothing else matters to you at the present time. So if it were between right and wrong it most likely wouldn’t matter to you so your ideas about it would change.

3. Yes war brings out things like loyalty courage and sacrifice, but hate, prejudice and arrogance I’m not quite sure of. I’m sure I would have hate towards the people I am fighting against, but not the whole culture. Just because a few people of a certain race did something that caused the war doesn’t mean that I would hate all of them, there is some good in the culture somewhere. So yes loyalty, courage and sacrifice would be shown, arrogance hate and prejudice I’m not so sure of.

4. War can be chaotic, but it has a meaning and a purpose to it. Some people can be confused about it and say they like or dislike it. They can say that all they want, but we aren’t the ones who have the final decision in it. We all have our opinions about it and will disagree with each other over it. So yea war is chaotic at times and yes it is sometimes very hard to find out the reason of the big mess.

5. The Vietnam War I don’t know a whole lot about. I do know a few things though. For one thing it was the longest military conflict in U.S. history. The Vietnam War was fought from 1959 to 1975. U.S. troops fought from 1965 to 1973. That’s all I know about the Vietnam War.

6. The things I want to know about the Vietnam War are why and how it started, who fought in it. And how it effected out economy.

7. I guess the war was controversial to everyone because no matter what it affected everyone in a certain way. So many people had different opinions on it so it just depends on how you felt about the war. That is why it was so controversial because no one knew what to think of it.

Fallen Angels

1. In the first passage I agree. When men go to war I think it shows them about life. It teaches them about the real world, and they get to see what men way older than them go through everyday. War opens up a lot of young men’s eyes and they seem to see stuff differently after war and act more mature. I think it helps them see what they should be. Instead of being immature and acting like a little kid.
2. In the second passage I also agree. When people go to war they are fighting most of the time for what people believe in. They must follow rules and laws in their country first before they can try to make someone else believe in them.
3. Also, in the third passage I agree. When people are at war they have to be strong and have a lot of courage. Some people learn to love their country and respect it and the people in it a lot more. Then other just get more offensive because they remember everything from war and most wars make people go crazy and do a lot of arrogant things.
4. I also agree to the forth statement. War sometimes might not make since to certain people. But there is always a reason behind a war. War is chaotic and it causes a lot of problems, but its something that also helps solve problems. War has its likes, and differences.

Thought Provoking Questions:

1.What do you already know about the Vietnam War?
I know that the war started in 1959 and didn’t end until 1975. It was fought between the North and the South, and in 1965 is when the U.S. entered the war to prevent a communist takeover of the South.
2.What do you want to know about the Vietnam War?
I want to know why it all started, and why the united states got in the middle of it? They should have just let the war finish and see what the outcome was and if they didn’t like it then they should have stepped in. By getting in the middle of it so early they spent a lot of money sooner then they needed to.
3.Why, in your opinion, was the Vietnam War so controversial?
In my own opinion the Vietnam War was so controversial because the South just relied on air superiority, and that didn’t always work. The North had a lot more weapons and a lot more strategies to do things. The south didn’t have a lot of the good weapons. Which made them loose a lot of power.

its preparing the next generation, and making them into responsible leaders. and i think that when they come back and hang out with all of their friends, they all see how it changed that person, and they might mature up too. and yes, i think we are doing enough for the returning soldiers. i mean they still get a steady pay, they get respect, and underage drinking...they get by with it...

The bad is you can die in war. Even though you can die you can die supporting your country and to me that a really good way to die.

2. I agree with this because while you’re in war you can rethink and look at the good and bad of situations you could be in. Also you can think about if it is a good decision or bad decision by things that compare to it at war.

3. I agree with this because when you are at war with other countries and nations you are taught to hate them. You are taught to kill them. You have to become prejudice towards the nation you are at war with.

4. I disagree with this because if you are at war you have time to think of stuff and you have to fight for the country because you want to keep the freedom in your country.

5. I already know that the Vietnam War was also called the Second Indochina War for the Vietnam Conflict. It occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.

6.Why Vietnam started. How many people occurred in this battle. How many people died in the battle. How long the battle took place.

7. I think it is because two-nation s is battling so of course they wanted get along. They are not supposed to get along they are at war. They are out to kill each others.

Nick,

Do you think that we do enough for Vets when they come home? Does the military do enough to help them mainstream?
What would you do if you were drafted? Do you believe that your own personal beliefs would interfere or aid in your decisions?

Great question about the economic effects of the Vietname War.

1. I agree because it takes a lot of guts to make the choice of going to the military.
It’s a big decision that takes time and a mature mind to go and have the responsibility of other people’s life, and to see what they see.

2.Yes I agree because it changes their thoughts on right and wrong decisions because they are more mature, and wiser.

3. I agree with this statement because you will do things you never thought that you could or would do until your put in certain situations where you have to do something courageous or loyal or even heroic.

4.I disagree with this statement because if it is for the right thing then yes we should go to war, but on the other hand I agree because a lot of times nations go to war for no reason and it really is meaningless for people to die for no reason.

5. I know that a lot of U.S soldiers died not only from the war but from sickness of the jungle. It was hard for them to travel because the camo was not made yet for the kind of terrain they were in.

6. I want to know why we went to war, and what was the cause of the war.

7. I don’t really know why but my guess would have to be because the U.S stepped in and made it controversial.

1. What do you already know about The Vietnam War? There was no reason for this is start. It was in the jungle. It rained all the time
2. What do you want to know about The Vietnam War? How many were killed, who it was against, and how long it lasted.
3. Why, in your opinion, was The Vietnam War so controversial? It was controversial because some people thought it wasn’t right, and another reason is because there was a draft.

1.ung soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience.
I agree because the young people who are put into the war have to grow up real quick. You have to have the guts to shoot someone.

2. War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong.
I agree because when your country decides to do something you don’t believe in you sometimes change your aspects about certain things.

3. War brings out extremes of behavior--not only courage, loyalty, and sacrifice but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance.
I agree because when someone who doesn’t believe in something and doesn’t get their way they become mean, but if someone does get their way in something they believe in they could become arrogant.

4. War is chaotic. People often find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in combat.
I agree because people are always protesting at war time, but I don’t agree that it is always wrong, because you can’t let other countries push us around.

1)
I agree that when a young soldier enters into the military, and is trained for combat, he is transformed into a mature young adult. The military teaches discipline, respect for authority, leadership and values. When a young soldier leaves the military, he is completely changed.

2)
I agree that if you were sent into a war, such as Vietnam, that your traditional notions of right and wrong would be changed. Such as if you didn’t believe in killing animals, and you needed to kill an animal for survival, your whole mindset about killing animals would be changed, because you would learn that some animals need to be sacrificed for human needs.

3)
I agree that war brings people to the extremes of their behaviors. Because when a human life is endangered, as in war, his or her instincts take over. When the instincts take over, the human mind does all it can to survive, therefore making it more brutal, making sure you kill them before they kill you.

4)
My idea on war is neutral. I think that there are wars that are called for, but some that aren’t. Right now, we are in Iraq, fighting a causeless war, costing many lives, and children, and other loved belongings. We’re over there using our money, when our country is already approximately $13 billion dollars in debt. On the other hand though, there are wars that are called for, Civil War, French War, WWI, WWII, and all the countries and wars we fought for our freedom.

Thought Provoking Questions

1)
I know that the Vietnam War was after WWII; I know it was between North and South Vietnam; I also know that the draft was brought in for this war. It was like our Civil War. I know that it occurred between the years 1960 and1975.

2)
I would like to know why the war was fought, why the war lasted so long. I would also like to know, what were the effects.

3)
I think that the Vietnam war was so controversial because it was like their Civil War, and when a part of a country turns against the other, it makes a big fight, and its hard to separate the country like that. Plus, the Vietnam war was fought to change their government forever, and that would have a ripple effect on us, because we bought our stuff from them. So we went over there to help them and that caused a really big controversy

1. I agree that young soldiers need to mature even if you’re at the legal age or not. It don’t matter how old you are, war is war. It is a difficult process at any age and has consequences to your actions. War is not only serious it’s your age that needs to mature to be more serious or the cause of death could be the reason for immaturity.

2. I agree cause when someone walks into war they don’t know what their getting their self into. Most people go in there to get their college paid off, depression, or think there is nothing else to do with their life except go to war. Everyone has a different mental thought at what his or her up against then others do.

3. I agree war brings out a certain and specific behavior depending the type of person you are and your home life styles. Some people can be more angered, excited, audacious, depending on what you’re looking for in war and what you’re not looking for. War is extremely dangerous and severe; you have to put your whole soul into things.

4. I disagree because war can bring out the best in people and maybe yet the worse. War is the meaning of life. If there were no one to fight because they thought it was confusing or chaotic then we wouldn’t have anyone fighting for our country and our freedom. We would not be given privileges or have any rights if it wasn’t for people sacrificing every day and we pay our respects for them as well. So being chaotic isn’t the meaning of war it’s the answers to life, you have to know what you want and put your whole heart into what you believe in.

5. I knew that the Vietnam War lasted over fifteen years of blood shed and tears. It was the U.S. against South Vietnamese, and they relied on air travel, weapons of mass destruction, and plan to destroy one another.

6. Every time you hear about the Vietnam War it’s tragedy and upsetting, and affects people who loved and who were there during those times. It was a major impact that caused a lot of deaths. People need to know about hard times and the history that goes along with it to understand that nothing like this should happen again.

7. It was so controversial because when you’re at war the disputes between you and them are always going to be a conflict. You’re not suppose to like them when their the ally your suppose to kill or destroy in all pretenses. There is a reason for war and it is to protect, fight, and not let someone take or destroy what is rightfully yours.

Natasha,
What about women in the military? IT is definitely a situation of grow up or die. Do you believe that everyone fights for the same beliefs? Could you do it if you disagreed with the reasoning?

Johnny and Colby,

Colby,

IS being patriotic and believing in everything that our government and political leaders tell us the same thing? In response to your statement "taught to hate": what about peace negotiations? What happens when a war or a conflict is over, do we still continue to hate?

1) Agree. Because of the young age people join the army and navy and such they are quite immature. Also, do to the great deal of responsibility and respect needed to have an greatly honored position with the army ranking the young learn quickly to be respectable and well respected citizens.

2) Agree. War is a great change in everything. Often changing peoples opinions on right and wrong as well and many other things. What one might not consider to be ‘too bad’ may be a horrific thing after seeing combat.

3) Agree. Also, due to the drastic changes in war life compared to ‘normal’ or ‘casual’ life, people’s opinions and even personalities can change. When someone is accustom to one way of living and is a gentle soul, after experiencing the horrifying fact of death and experiencing the typical ‘war life’ there mood towards things can change. They can become more violent because they had to be violent during the combat. Courage is a given. A tremendous amount of courage is needed to even joy the army, knowing you could face death before you.

4) Agree. Based on how I feel about war, though I respect the people who fight for our country I don’t particularly find war appealing, I can see why people wouldn’t understand war or combat. Yet, in some cases it is needed. You have your people who want to go to war and fight no matter what the case. Then again you also have your people who are 100% against war and protest it to, as history has shown us, great extent.
Weather someone finds it hard to make sense of war or not surly depends on that person as an individual.

1) I do not currently know much about the Vietnam War. Other than the fact that it was held in Vietnam.

2) I do believe it is very important to be aware of what is held in our historic past. The reason I believe this is because history has proven to repeat itself. If WE as the people of pretty much the world do not learn from out past and our elders past accomplishes and mistakes how would the world excel? The Vietnam Was is a great part of history. I would be more than willing to learn about it. Particular parts of interest would be: Nursing Corps, Were women able to take part in helping this war?, How many casualties on each part, and over all what caused the war?

3)I would believe that the War was so controversial because of the different races and what ethnic backgrounds. Different countries believed different things, some agreed on some things and disagreed on others.

Fallen Angels

1. In the first statement, I agree. The reason I agree is because in my opinion, soldiers in combat do make a huge transformation. In combat and war it’s nothing like you have ever seen before. It teaches men and women about real life. That not everything is a joke and get by. To me, men may go into war and think they know everything and they have a rude awaking. I think the war will open a lot of peoples eye and leave them with more maturity.

2. In the second statement, I also agree. Your opinions and tradition may be different before you go into war. War is a huge deal and what you may have though was wrong before you went to war, may not seem so wrong anymore.

3. Also in the third statement I agree. War is clearly indescribable and has major effects on people. In war you will see things you have never seen before and some images that you can never get out of your head. So for that, it does bring out extreme behaviors and has different behaviors for everyone. Some may take it to respect their country and friends, and others may be in it for the brutality and become very arrogant,

4. I disagree to this statement. I do though agree to war is chaotic, but I disagree that people find it difficult to make sense or find meaning of it. People don’t go to war just to be going. There is always a reason behind every war and every body lost.

Thought Provoking Questions

1. What do you already know about The Vietnam War?
I know that The Vietnam War stared in 1960. It was the longest military conflict in U.S. history and was not over until 1975. The war lasted 15 years. I also know that about 58,200 people where killed during the war and about 304,000 people were wounded.

2. What do you want to know about the Vietnam War?
I would like to find out what the cause for the war was and why it lasted so much longer than other wars. I would also like to find out how many people served in the war and who was involved.

3. Why, in your opinion, was the Vietnam War so controversial?
In my opinion the Vietnam War very controversial because the war was so large and lasted so long. Also because so many people were involved in the war and so many people were wounded or killed. I think because of this, the parents/family/friends of the people in the war became very concerned and upset and it made an uproar to the public and caused a big dispute.

yes, i think we should give the vets more medical attention after they get back from war. like just checking them out and making sure they are ok. like as in not haveing any flash backs..and juss stuff like that.

Chez,

I think that Vets are greatly respected by all Americans. If you’re an American and don’t thank your veterans for what they have done you are a very self-centered person. But to answer your question yes ,I think we treat our veterans with the respect that they deserve. I’m sure that the military helps them out when they come back to a normal society. They offer many things help them get back to the normal life that they once lived, I’m almost certain of that, If I was to be drafted I would be the first to stand up for our country. Yes I would have some fear but I would stand up and do what I had to do. I think that my own personal decisions would stick with me as I went through life. The only way I would change is if they were forced out of me. I try to always stay the same person that I have always been and I always will try to never change my good ways and my good decision-making. I want to be all that I can be.

What about when there is a draft and it is no longer a choice? Who determines what is right and what is wrong? Do a bit of research on The Vietnam War and see what you uncover.

Tammie and Chad,
Do you disagree or agree with a draft? What about when you disagree with your own government?

Chris and Jessica,
Your comments leave me with this in mind: man vs animal/ civilization vs survival. Can you compare and contrast the Vietname War with what is happening today?

Britt,
What do you mean when you say, "Ware is the meaning of life?" Please explain in further details what you are implying. Also is there a comparison or a contrast between what is happening today and what was happening then?

Agree and Disagree Questions: Fallen Angels
1. I agree with the question the young solders have to grow up a lot faster than most cause they have to face death everyday.

2. I agree with this statement cause most people think there life is so hard until the go to other countries.

3. I agree with this statement cause people go to war and it messes with their mind. After the war they think they have the ability to kill anyone.

4. I Agree and disagree It can be insane and yes people can go crazy in battle. But some people can control their acts and temper.

Depth Questions: Fallen Angels
1. The Vietnam War was between America and the Japanese.
If you were drafted you had to go or get put in prison. Some people managed to leave the country but weren’t aloud back in the country.

2. I want to know what exactly started the war and why they drafted soldiers. Why did they not spend money like they should have on the solders?

3. The Vietnam War was so controversial because there were many different countries and races in this war. Both young and old people fought. They should have gave the soldiers that came home

Anonymous said...

1. I agree, I think that younger soldiers changed when they went to war because they were used to doing what they wanted and in the army they were disciplined and trained everyday.

2. War sometimes does change someone’s whole personality. Some people might think that killing anyone no matter what, is bad, but after they go to war they be angry at the other countries that fought against them and hate them.

3. When people are fighting for their country they change their thinking. They are not worried about smaller things and they gain bravery and discipline, but they also might become prejudice against the other countries.

4. People might find war a scary thing and they don’t want to be a part of it. New recruits or people that have been drafted might think it’s hard to fight another country for no reason.

1. I know that the war was against North and South Vietnam. The North was communist and the South was the government and was supported by the U.S. It was sixteen years long and happened through Vietnam and Cambodia. Over a million people died by the end.

2. I want to know what the war was about and what started it. Why it lasted for sixteen years. How it finally ended.

3. I think that the Vietnam War was controversial because a lot of Americans thought it was a bad idea to be in a war that didn’t have to do with us in the beginning. It was a war between the two sides of Vietnam and our people didn’t want to be a part of it. They probably thought that the president was making a bad decision by helping South Vietnam.

1.I agree because if you are young you should not be killing people. You only live once and if you do kill someone and you get caught then you will go to jail of even prison. I don’t think that you want to be living your life in a jail or a prison. When you say that you didn’t do something that you really did do it, then you get in more trouble when you lie about it. Then when someone asked you why did you do it you could just say that it was an experience that I wanted to try before I died.

2.I agree because not all people have the same feelings about things and some might. I think if I were in the wars I would just keep my feelings and my comments to myself. I don’t believe that you have to tell people about your own person thing that has happened to you. I don’t think that you should have to pick a side of right and wrong. If you think that something is wrong then don’t say anything about it and it you do think that it is right then you should say something about it.

3.I agree because when people go into the war other people are probably like well think that I like this person because they are loyal, nice, and things like that. Then when you really get to know them they change their way about all the other people. They can change from nice people to rude and prejudice people. I don’t think that they should be like that towards people.

4.I disagree with this one because you can always have things to make sense about the war. If you don’t know things about the war then you should stay out of the war if you can. If you can’t stay out of the war and you have to go then you should study things about the war before you go. If you still don’t understand then you should keep trying to understand and when you get there and you are still confused you should ask someone else that has been in the war before. When you go into the war not knowing what you are doing and then you stay there and then you will come back home knowing more and better things that you have never knowing before.

5.I really don’t know anything about the Vietnam War. I would love to know something that I don’t know. I know that I feel really stupid because I don’t know anything about the Vietnam War. When people talk about the Vietnam War I’m just confused and I don’t know what they are talking about. It might sound stupid but like when I’m in history class and I don’t know what they are talking about I have to go home and ask my brother to explain things to me.

6.I want to know just a few things about the Vietnam War because I’m dumb and I don’t know anything. I would like to know how long the Vietnam War was, how many people were killed, how many people were wounded, when did the Vietnam War begin, and when did the Vietnam War ended.

7.I’m going to answer this question the best way that I can and the best way that I know how too. The Vietnam War was backed out because they didn’t want to fight anymore. There were so many people that were getting killed by other people. Each day that they fought they would lose so many people, so they just gave up and said that they didn’t want to fight anymore. Just think about if you were in the Vietnam War and each day that you came outside to take a walk or something you would either be getting shot at or you would be getting killed.

1.I already know that in the Vietnam War it rained a lot, it was in the jungle, and they had a draft.

2.I want to know why the war even began, why it lasted for 16 years, and how many countries were involved.

3.I think that the war was so controversial because many people didn’t think they even needed to be in the war.

1.I agree because, young soldiers that are engaged in combat change so much because they see stuff most people wouldn’t see.

2.I agree that war forces people to reconsider their belief in what’s wrong and right,
Because what some people use to believe in doing or not doing may change once war begins because they may think there will be a draft and they’ll be drafted. And, they may die.

3.I agree that war brings out courage, loyalty, sacrifice, brutality, prejudice, and arrogance, because when you’re in war you need to be all those things to come out alive.

4.I agree that war is chaotic and people find it hard to make sense of it or find meaning in combat, because they might think there isn’t any reason to be in that war.

1. I agree with this statement because when you are forced to enter a situation like war you are forced to fight for your life. In the battles you are put through you have challenges you have to overcome. In the midst of all the fighting with your personal emotions and fighting for life you have to do things you would not typically do so that you may keep your life. This forces you to change or adapt to your situation, which forces you to mature at a young age you have to be ready for anything no matter your age. In the midst of adapting to your situation you loose the innocence that you once had when you were not forced to fight for your survival. Sometimes people forget that no matter what happens none of us are strong enough to overcome experiences that are unnatural or against our beliefs.

2. I agree with this statement because when you are in war fighting for your safety and the safety of others you are put into situations where its do or die. Eventually you will adapt to the things that you have to do which will make it seem ok but to others it will seem like something that is unimaginable. For example when you are in war you may have to kill someone that you don’t even know and they have never done anything to you just because they are the enemy. That would be completely unacceptable in daily life but in war its has to be done.

3. I would agree with this statement because in war you are forced to be strong and brave which can sometimes be mistaken for arrogance. War is a very brutal and challenging experience that will affect your life from the day you enter until the day you die. The experiences will never escape your mind because of the suffering and hard ship you have to endure.

4. I find this statement very true because of how much controversy there is with the war in Iraq. People don’t understand that without our soldier’s protection we would not have the safety that we have today. We would live our lives in fear of daily torment and abuse maybe even death. With out war other countries would just take over and that would not be a good thing. We would not have trade or negotiations we would have more terrorism and the death rate would surely increase.

Research questions!

1. What do you already know about The Vietnam War?

I don’t really know much about the Vietnam War accept for things that I have heard throughout my life. My grandfather was in the Vietnam War he once told me that his time spent there was the most horrible and frightening experience of his life. After the war the soldiers came home and were not warmly welcomed. People responded to them in horrible ways like spitting on them.

2. What do you want to know about The Vietnam War?
Well I personally would like to know what went on to make the citizens so angry with our soldiers. What happened during the war to make people want to turn against the people who defend our country?

3. Why, in your opinion, was The Vietnam War so controversial?

I personally feel that the reason the Vietnam War was so controversial is because of the way the soldiers were treated. They were forced to go into battle no matter how serious the injuries were that they had sustained. The only way that they were coming home was if they were dead. This situation caused a lot of controversy.

Nick,
I actually agree with you. WE as Americans should be thankful for our “Vets.” They got us where we are today! Instead of backing down on us and running away from a battle they fought when they felt we needed to be protected! They were there for us! Not only their families. They fought with honor knowing they could die! Though they were scared.
Honestly? Why would someone not thank a Vet.?

As i read these i realize that we dont know very much about the vietnam war. we all think we know but we dont. Vietnam war is such a confusing subject that we have all been tought many of times but still of yet to come to realize and understand what it is really about. I want to finally be able to understand the Vietnam War as much as possible.

Stephanie,

Do you think that 18 is the appropriate age? War has become personal because so many of us know individuals who are serving. I think if we found war appealing, then something might be wrong. It's ok to be supportive and hating that fact that we have had to send men and women there.

Alysia,

Do you believe in the drafting process? Do you think it should be enforced with women too? Does one always have to agree with the reasons that the government states as the reasons for war?

Nick,
I admire your bravery and courage. I do think we NOW show honor and respect towards our veterans, but I'm curious as to how good of a job the military and Veteran Affairs does in transitioning them back into the real world. So much mental and physical ails can come from service.

Thanks,
Chez

The Vietnam war was a war fought for no cause, the only reason we were over there, was because if their government changed, that would greatly affect us. We fought over there for over 25 years, and we had a very slim chance of coming out on top. In Vietnam, we had people die of hunger, thirst, or animals, because a lot of Vietnam was jungle. But over in Iraq we were protecting our country, now, after we have verified that there are no weapons of mass destruction over there, we have no business over there. We have been over there for 7 years. The war needs to end. We don’t belong over there. We technically didn’t even belong in Vietnam; it wasn’t our war to fight. And when the Islam and the Muslims get into a war, we don’t belong in it either, we need to keep our men and women over here, to protect our countries, not other peoples.

Tammie and Chad,
Do you disagree or agree with a draft? What about when you disagree with your own government? i agree with it because the gov. shouldn't have to force people to protect themselves but if it comes down to it you gotta do what you gotta do. Well people have every right to disagree not that it always matters, but just because there higher on the pole then us doesn't make everything they do right!

Britt,
What do you mean when you say, "Ware is the meaning of life?"

Chez, War is the meaning of life because were always going to have world even though we want more than anything is world peace. Without war people will try and take what’s rightfully ours. Like how we have this whole dispute with Iraq they came over here destroyed what was ours and killed tons of innocent people, is it fair? No, it isn’t. But, should it affect others that were not involved? In some situation it does, because if we can’t have trust than there will always be war.

Yes im sure Vets still have their visions, thoughts and even dreams about their past expierences with war. But im with you im not sure how well they are treated for these things. One thing im sure of is that they have to have things like debreifings and things like that.

Steph,
I agree with you and Nick. We should appreciate our vets more. I dont think we do enough for them. They get one day out of 365 to really be recognized. we need more days for them all. They deserve to be noticed every where they go no matter if the are current soldiers or vets.

Yes, I do believe in the drafting process and in somewhat ways I do believe it should be enforced with women too. In my eyes, men and women should be treated equal and it is not fair for the men to be drafted to war and the women not. Although the women may have kids to attend, the men and women should have equal responsibilities. And for the last question, No, one does not always have to agree with the reasons that the goverenment states for the cause of war. People are entitled to their own views and opinions.

Chezzz,
I think that the women who are in the military are very strong. They are way stronger than me, and if i had to be in the military i wouldn't make it. It's a very big challenge and i could not ever face that challenge. And no i dont think everyone fights for the same beliefs, everyone has their own way of seeing things. But in a war the side that is the strongest is goin to try their best do make you see things the way they do.

Chez,
Most feel 18 is an appropriate age for joining the military or the navy because when your 18 you are of ‘legal’ age. I have conflicts among myself concerning the ‘right’ age for joining the military. Unless I have the motivation personally to join I don’t feel I should be judgmental of the age. IT is a personal decision. Also, as long as we have a decent amount of WILLING people to join. There is no need to reinstate a draft which would be FORCING someone to join when they don’t want to. The draft is something I don’t support.

1. I agree because if you put a young teen in a situation that forces him to shoot to kill, he will realize what the harsh part of reality is like. When they enter war, they are not children anymore. They become men when they take the responsibility to defend their nation and it takes a man to take responsibilities.

2. I agree because no matter how happy or heroic the story is, war always ends with pain. My grandfather told me stories about his tour in Germany. He told me things that I would wish I never heard. He told me a story describing how bad the hundred lifeless bodies stunk so badly when they burned them. H would tell me stories of how he saw the blood of his enemies dripped off the end of his knife made him sick. He even told me what happened when he killed for the first time. He described to me how he shot someone at the age of 19. As he walked towards him, the guy spat up blood and finally gave one last breath and he finally died. After he told me that, he started to tear up in his eyes. Even I started to cry with him wishing that he would’ve never told me that. He told me all the other bad things he did that to this day give him nightmares.
3. I’d agree with that one. But not only does It bring heroism, it also brings out the coward in people. If you have seen the movie “Saving Private Ryan”, you would see a scene where a German is trying to kill an American soldier. The American soldier is crying out for help and the guy runs away and does not help him out.
4. I’m not sure what to say about this question. I know why we went to Europe and fight because the Japanese bombed us, but there is also the war in Iraq and I don’t understand that war. We are just killing our guys and the last time I saw someone coming home, they were in a body bag. I guess it depends on the situation.
1. I don’t know much about the Vietnam, but I do know that we were at war with Vietnam and I think that we were at war with North Korea at the same time.
2. The only thing I want to know is that what was the reason behind the Vietnam War. Everybody that I have asked has no answer for me. Not even my ROTC instructor.
3. The biggest reason it was so controversial was because nobody knew why we were over there.

Heiss,
We, as Americans, do not realize how great we have it. Many other countries have it much worse. I think those that serve over seas are privy to this.

I'm interested to see what you find out about the money and how it was dispersed.

Dalton,
Should the anger continue when it is no longer war time? Is it possible to support the troops and not the cause?

Kyrstin,
Is it harder to live with the thought of committing a murder or doing the jail time? DOn't ever feel stupid. One must search out information to keep informed. You are doing that. Glad that you are using your brother as a resource!

Kelli,
Can other experiences change a belief system?

Tiffany,
Are there similarities and differences between The Vietnam War and what is happening today?

Thanks,
Chez

Chris Burke,

Your grandfather must really trust you. So many times are soldiers come back from duty to relive the nightmares that your grandfather told you about. Do you think that Veteran Affairs does enough to help vets when returning? Or do you think that no matter how much is done, the damage is already there?

Secondly, there are some create websites and books out there that discuss the many theories as to why the US became involved. I think you would like reading some of the information out there.

Thanks,
Chez
