Fallen Angels Introduction-11th Grade-2nd Block

We will begin reading the novel Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers early next week. You will need to go to the library and check out your own copy of Fallen Angels before next Monday. You will need to do this on your own time. You will not be permitted to leave class to go and check your book out. You have the time before school, after school, and during your lunch to do this.

Look at the following questions and respond to them in the comment section. If you decide to post anonymously, without providing a user name, be sure to include your name in your post so that I may award you credit for completing the project. Some of the questions may require you to research other areas of the Internet. Perhaps, you might look up a summary of the novel to help you in making a decision. Please use your time wisely. You have only today in class to finish the assignment. I also encourage you to read what others are posting and feel free to respond and comment appropriately. All inappropriate comments will result in deduction of points for the project.

DO NOT COPY AND PASTE RESPONSES FROM OTHER SOURCES. I WILL BE DOING A CHECK. ANYONE CAUGHT DOING THIS WILL RECEIVE A 0/100 FOR THE PROJECT AND WILL BE WRITTEN UP FOR ACADEMIC DISHONESTY. You've been warned!

Fallen Angels

The following statements represent big ideas from the novel that can relate to many other war-related texts you might read. Simply write "agree" or "disagree" and more importantly, explain WHY.

1. Young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience.

2. War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong.

3. War brings out extremes of behavior--not only courage, loyalty, and sacrifice but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance.

4. War is chaotic. People often find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in combat.

Thought Provoking Questions. (Yes, you will need to answer these in depth which will require you to do some research online.)

1. What do you already know about The Vietnam War?
2. What do you want to know about The Vietnam War?
3. Why, in your opinion, was The Vietnam War so controversial?

1. Agree. I think that young people who go to war have to grow up fast and get mature or they wont make it.
2. Disagree. Because it you really believe in your right and wrong then they are not going to change for anything.
3. Agree. It makes you be brutal so you can kill your enemy and loyal to your own people so they will know you will watch their back and they will watch yours.
4. Agree. Most people think that it would be easy but after you get over there and people start dying you start to go crazy.

1. I know nothing about the Vietnam War.
2. Anything and everything I can find out about it.
3. I have no idea why it was so controversial. I have never learned about it.

1. Young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience.

Agree, because you have to learn something before you can be good at something.

2. War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong.
Disagree, because there is always going to be a right and wrong.

3. War brings out extremes of behavior--courage, loyalty, and sacrifice but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance.
Agree, because in the war you have to stay focus and when you are not focusing on the war you over go some changes.

4. War is chaotic. People often find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in combat.

Disagree, because in someway or another there will always see a meaning be hind war.

1. What do you already know about The Vietnam War?
The Vietnam War was between Asia and Korea but when the war got out of hand the Americans stepped in and help out Korea, we lost a lot of people in that war and it was the longest war we ever fought in.

2. What do you want to know about The Vietnam War?
How did it last and how many people die from each side.

3. Why, in your opinion, was The Vietnam War so controversial?
Because it involved Asia, who never fought in any war and Korea, who really didn’t fight in any war either, but when America stepped in peole started saying it was controversial, because of America stepping into a war they never should have been in.

1. I agree because they experience so much and see so much stuff being in the war they see people get killed and they have to be mature about that situation and just go on like that never happened, sometimes they see their friends be killed, and they have to learn to work together.
2. I agree because their traditional is not to kill people but sometimes you have to over there in war, and they see stuff that happens to other people and they don’t like it, but they go with it and just let it happen.
3. I agree because you cant be afraid to shot somebody, you have to be mean in certain situations you cant show a soft side.
4. I agree because we are taught to not fight and then they have the war where your over there fighting and killing people instead of having a peace agreement like when we fight and you also could go to jail for fighting but then they have the war.
1. I know that it was known as the second Indochina war, it was from 1959 to 1975, the U.S. supported the south Vietnam, and it had a major impact on U.S. politics, culture and foreign relations.
2. I want to know how many people died, what happened, why it happened, and what impact did it have on other countries.
3. in my opinion the Vietnam war was the most controversial because of what our president said and because America just wouldn’t jump into a war that wasn’t there.

Anonymous said...

1. I completely agree with that statement because, when you go into something that conflicted then your going to see things you don’t want to see, and you have to grow up faster than you might want. You may have fears but you have to get over them faster than expected.

2. I agree, when you go into the war your not use to killing people that’s something you thought you would never have to do. But when your there in the action you have to.

3. I also agree. It brings out courage in some people when there over there in that action because they know that they are there for the freedom of America, but it may also bring out arrogance because when they come home they may get the feeling that there better than every one, or that since we were not in the war we didn’t do anything for the freedom of America.

4. I agree, I do not understand the war at all. But im glad there are people fighting for my freedom!

5. The Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in U.S history. It claimed the lives of more than 58,000 Americans. Another 304,000 were wounded.

6. I want to know how it was back then and why so many soldiers died. Why it was the longest was in U.S history?

7. I think it was because of the pride they hade for their country and didn’t want to surrender.

1. I agree because they realize what it’s like to fight for your country and the experience changes their life not only mentally but also physically.
2. I disagree because they are going to believe what they were brought up to believe. I don’t think war would change their beliefs on what is right and what is wrong. I think they are going to believe the same way whenever they get back home.
3. I agree with that because you find out who would be a good leader or who has the most courage. You can find out a lot about people when they go to war. You figure out how far someone would go for his or her country.
4. I disagree because sometimes you have to go to war for certain reasons. War is not always chaotic it is for a good reason. You have to fight for your country and for your beliefs.

Questions
1. Over 58,000 people were killed. It last for over 7 years. They changed weapons during the war. There was more than 1 country over there. There were troops from Korea.
2. What the reason was for the war. What kinds of medals were given out? What kind of weapons and technology they had?
3. People thought it was never an official war. People thought it happened only because of the conflict. They said it was because of the behavior and the pride of Vietnam.

2. I do not agree that war often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong because I just don’t think people would change their ways because of war.
3. I do believe war brings out extremes of behavior. For example: Some people get offended about the ways others react to war and it brings out “extreme” behavior.
4. I agree that people do find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in war or combat. I’ve heard many people speak their minds about how we shouldn’t have gone to this war with Iraq.
Thought Provoking Questions
1. A few things I know about the Vietnam War are that it was an unnecessary political war that cost tens of thousands lives. It was believed that America was just sticking their noses where they shouldn’t have been sticking them.

3. I don’t know why the Vietnam War was so controversial because I’ve never learned about this war.

We mean that in school and outside school we are always taught to stand up for ourselves, but in doing that not to fight about it, but to stay calm and talk it out.
In war, they are teaching them to fight, they aren't talking it out or they aren't calm about it. War is murder and over here you go to jail for murder and then the war is going on and they are killing people.

1. I agree that young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation, because people that seen things like they have would understand the seriousness of fighting in the war. They know that at any time they could have their life taken away.

2. I agree that War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong, because they might not want to do something that they don’t believe in but still got to do it because it’s their job to obey orders.

3. I agree that war brings out extremes of behavior--not only courage, loyalty, and sacrifice but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance, because you can be scared but once you’re out there you got to stay out there until it’s over.

4. I agree that War is chaotic and that people often find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in combat, because no one likes killing people…. Even if is for our country.

1. I know that the Vietnam War was the longest military conflict in U.S. history. Vietnam lasted from 1959 to 1975.
2. I want to learn anything and everything that I could possibly learn about the Vietnam.
3. Vietnam was never an official war , it was only called a war by people because of so many conflicts.

1.I agree that young soldiers undergo a transformation from innocent to experience when they train because they have to grow up and face some of their fears. They push themselves to be the best so they have to outgrow some things they do and try hard.
2.I agree that War often makes people re-think their notions of right and wrong because some people believe killing is wrong and then they shoot somebody in another country for their own safety so that changes how people think about right and wrong.
3.I don’t think war brings out everything in people but it sometimes brings out fear, and courage but not so much hate, and arrogance.
4.War is chaotic but it also is for a good cause. It makes a country declare that they are stronger than another and wont give in and will fight to stay the country that it has always been.

Thought questions

1 .I know that the Vietnam War was originally between the French and the Vietnamese, but then America decided to step in when they shouldn’t have thus causing the war to really take off, but it wasn’t an official war because it a fight within itself.

2. I would like to know what really started the Vietnam War, why the United States stepped in, and why the French wouldn’t let Vietnam have their own independence.

3. It was so controversial because some people believed we shouldn’t have been fighting in the war because it was causing hurt to the country.Others thought we should fight because it would help our foreign friends, and showing them that we would help them and maybe when we are in trouble they might help us.

1.I agree, many young men do mature when they are around serious things and when they are around other mature adults.
2.I disagree, I think that if a person thinks something is right or wrong until they have been proven otherwise their minds will not be changed.
3.I agree, mostly gentlemen, when in war, start to feel courage, loyalty, and sacrifice, and some may also have a sense of brutality, prejudice, and arrogance.
4.I disagree because some may feel that way but I think that most people that go into combat feel as if they are protecting their families and their country, which is an honor.
5.I do not know anything about the Vietnam War.
6.The things I want to know about the Vietnam War is; when it started, why it happened, where all it took place, how long it lasted, and how many lives it took.
7.The Vietnam War was so controversial and questionable because it wasn’t an official war. It was only called a war because of all the conflict that was brought upon it.

Agree or Disagree
1) Young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience.

We agree with the statement because we think that as they go through their combat training they are surrounded with older gentlemen. They learn from their stories and experiences as they communicate. So this makes them go in knowing nothing by being innocent and come out by knowing a lot more near everything by experiencing.

2) War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong.

We also agree with this statement traditionally you wouldn’t kill people but at war you are forced to. At war you are at state of killing at least someone when it comes down to it. There would be no point to go into war if you aren’t going to defend yourself if you won’t kill.

3) War brings out extremes of behavior--not only courage, loyalty, and sacrifice but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance.

We are agreeing to this statement because you have to have attitude such as being brutal to have the courage to fight and win. You will have to learn how to stand up for yourself before you stand up for whom you are fighting for.

4) War is chaotic. People often find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in combat.

We both agree and disagree. We disagree because you won’t know how chaotic war is unless you are actually there. We mostly agree because from the stories you might hear, your opinion could be you wouldn’t want to go to war because of what they tell you, you’ll think you know how it feels being in war. BUT to us, if we went to war we would get a better feeling or vibe of war if we were actually there to experience what was really done.

Questions
1) What do you already know about The Vietnam War?
We know that the US went in at 1965 and ended at 1969. There were many ethnic groups involved. It was Americas longest war.

2) What do you want to know about The Vietnam War?
We would want to know why it started and more about what happened in it.

3) Why, in your opinion, was The Vietnam War so controversial?
We think the Vietnam War was controversial because there were so many thing to debate on and it caused people to argue and fight.

1. Young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience.
I agree with the idea because the only way to accomplish something is to do it on your own.

2. War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong.
True because while you are there their tradition is your tradition.

3. War brings out extremes of behavior--courage, loyalty, and sacrifice but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance.
True after they get to where they are at their destination and see how it is they act like they are the best and the pressure hits them its every man for them selves.

4. War is chaotic. People often find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in combat.
Because when you are in combat you don’t really think more than less you just react.

Thought Provoking Questions. (Yes, you will need to answer these in depth which will require you to do some research online.)
1. What do you already know about The Vietnam War? The Vietnam War was the second Indochina war, and it lasted from 1959 to April 30 1975, and it was the world’s longest war, and all parties signed the peace treaty in January 1973 and, in June 1973 the U.S. military was no longer aloud to intervene
2. What do you want to know about The Vietnam War? Where the parties were positioned, and what weapons they used when exactly the U.S. military stepped in and helped them.
3. Why, in your opinion, was The Vietnam War so controversial? It really isn’t a dispute its just what I know, what I want to know, and what I think about it.

Define "good causes" for me. I'm curious.

Emerald, Keith, and Courtney,
What about women in the military?
Has an experience ever altered your thoughts on right and wrong? Can everything be so easily justified? Why wasn't Vietnam considered and official war?

AGREE OR DISSAGREE Q's

1. I agree that young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation, a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience, because they go in inexperienced and immature. I believe how hard they are to them in combat training makes them grow up quick and get stronger, bettering and maturing them.

2. I agree that war often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong, because to most traditions killing someone is wrong under any condition, but when you go into a war, you’ll most likely be killing someone and possibly in a gruesome way.

3. I agree that war brings out extremes of behavior, not only courage, loyalty, and sacrifice, but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance. When you go to war your going in full of courage for what your about to go through or witness; your remaining loyal by sacrificing your life for your country. It’s also brutal, prejudice and arrogant because your killing people for their beliefs and what they stand for, or what they are, and that’s prejudice.

4. I agree that war is chaotic, but I don’t believe people find it difficult to make sense of or find meaning in combat, maybe some people do, but not all people. We don’t just go to combat for no reason, so the reason would be the meaning of going, so no I don’t believe people find it hard to make sense of it.

3 Q's -Vietnam-

1. We know that it was the longest controversy in U.S. History.
It began in 1959. 58 thousand Americans died! The cost was around 150$ billion dollars.

2. We would like to know- how it started; who actually won; and what the cause was.

3.In our opinion the Vietnam war was so contraversial becuase it wasn't an actual war, it was just like a battle, and no one actually surrendered.

1. Young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience.
I do agree that they undergo transformation because they have to grow up a little faster and have to become more mature.

And yes, I did find similarities in the Vietnam War and today's war. Both of the wars took/ are taking many, many American lives. But I also see differences: I believe that we should have went into the war that's going on today but I think it was unnecessary for us to go into Vietnam. The USA should have minded their own business.

1. Young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience.

Yes, I agree that soldiers change in combat. All the cruelty they see, change them.

2. War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong.

Yes, I agree. Some people maybe see the bad sides of war they never expected. Others maybe undergo brainwashing in the military, so they change their opinion.

3. War brings out extremes of behavior--not only courage, loyalty, and sacrifice but also brutality, prejudice, and arrogance.

Yes, I agree. My grandmother told me, that my grandfather s behavior changed, when he came back from WW II.

4. War is chaotic. People often find it difficult to make sense or find meaning in combat.

Yes, I agree. Different people have different opinions about the war. Some think war is necessary, other can’t see the point in war.

Thought Provoking Questions. (Yes, you will need to answer these in depth which will require you to do some research online.)
1. What do you already know about The Vietnam War?

The Vietnam War occurred from 1950 to April 30, 1975. It was fought in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Lagos. In the war 3 to 4 million Vietnamese from both sides, 1.5 to 2 million Laotians and Cambodians, and 58,159 U.S. soldiers were killed. The war was mainly between the communist North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by its communist allies and South Vietnam was supported by the United States and others.

2. What do you want to know about The Vietnam War?

Why the US sent troops to Vietnam.

3. Why, in your opinion, was The Vietnam War so controversial?

I think that many couldn’t find reason why the US fought in it. Vietnam is such as small country at the other side of the world. It has not the best resources. Why did the US, a world power, should be interested in what happens there.

Prejudice; In order for wanting to go to war you have to dislike the people your going agaisnt. When soldiers go to war their tought to hate and kill the people their going against, and im sure prejudice slanders are made; maybe by their race or beliefs.

It would be contraversial but mostly the people that say no to war, just feel that way, they dont really have a choice whether it happends or not. Some people think its pointless to go, and some dont, either way we believe there will always be war, and soldiers.

1. Young soldiers engaged in combat typically undergo a personal transformation--a passage from youth to maturity, from innocent to experience. I agree on some behaves like if the under aged child has dropped out of school they should be able to go in the military services.

2. War often forces people to reconsider their traditional notions of right and wrong. True if that person had a good life before that happened. He is most likely to be different when he comes out of the military services.

Leonard,

Do you believe that drops outs should be allowed to enlist without taking their GED first? What are your thoughts on that? Also your responses to the thought provoking questions were a bit vague.
Thanks,

1) Agree. Young people in a war have to act like adults, nobody needs children in a war. They learn to get very responsible.

2) I'm not sure, maybe.

3) Agree. That's definetely right, you discover sides of your personnality you never knew they were there.

4) Agree. Nobody really knows what they are fighting about as soon as it started.

What I know about the Vietnam war:
I think it was in France, America and Vietnam. The during was 3 years. It started in 1946.
